Position Overview & Specifications
Based in our Chippenham offices, you’ll work in a team focusing on operators and companies in the waste sector. The work includes:
- Enforcing environmental regulations.
- Influencing companies and businesses to move from correction to prevention.
- Using your excellent customer service skills to engage with local communities and operators.
- Visiting sites to conduct inspections.
- Dealing with and investigating environmental offences and incidents.
- Giving evidence in court.
- Attending to out of hours emergencies as part of a standby rota.
- Advising how people and businesses can improve the environment.
You will be responsible for regulating a range of activities to ensure they are carried out without polluting the environment or causing harm to people. Sometimes we have to take tough action to achieve these aims and, at times, you will need to investigate environmental offences. You may also be required on occasion to give evidence in a court of law.
The role will require you to take preventative actions as well as supporting wider incident management. This will include taking part in a duty rota to provide a 24 hour response to incidents. This is a team role and you’ll never be on your own – you’ll have back up from colleagues and incident support staff.
The job is extremely varied, vital and sometimes challenging. You may be working with business customers to help them operate legally; while at other times you will be enforcing the law and making sure operators improve their performance. The team You will be based in our Chippenham office as part of a great operational team that works along the M4 corridor and surrounds from Swindon through to Bristol. As a Waste Environment Officer you will be responsible for regulating permitted sites in the waste industry through regular visiting and auditing of the premises. Ensuring all environmental regulations are met to help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment. Experience/skills required We’re looking for candidates with enthusiasm and the right skills to succeed in the role and are/have:
- Good people skills, working with both internal and external customers.
- Organised and self-motivated individual capable of prioritising and problem solving.
- Aptitude to work independently with minimal supervision.
- A keen eye for detail and accuracy, with the ability to analyse and present information.
- Good experience of Microsoft Office suite.
- Flexible and adaptable with positive attitude and willing to contribute to a diverse and inclusive work culture.
You’ll be qualified to at least A’ level or degree standard (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline. However it is not necessary to have experience of working in the Environment Agency or the waste industry when you apply for this role. There is comprehensive training scheme which will support and develop you in this role. Contact and additional information Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents, or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.
