Position Overview & Specifications

Job Introduction

It’s a busy role, as Milton Keynes is changing and growing, and we also receive regular and ad-hoc updates from partners such as the Biological Records Centre. Increasingly, we’ll be mapping new information in line with Government legislation, such as ecosystem services, local nature recovery areas and biodiversity off-setting. Some updates may require conversion from other GIS systems into QGIS.

You’ll be a self-starter who is full of initiative to seek opportunities for knowledge sharing. You’ll be able to work effectively as part of a busy team whilst managing your own workload. Being able to communicate clearly and explain technical matters to colleagues and stakeholders at all levels is essential.

Role Responsibilities
  • Providing technical GIS coordination, support and delivering outputs related to environment, planning, rights of way, and landscape.
  • Data management, data visualisations, cartography, spatial analysis, and other GIS linked tasks.
  • Producing project related correspondence, reports and GIS outputs, including technical report writing, statistics, web apps and mapping.
  • Deliver GIS support and training to staff and partners as required.
  • Perform quality control checks of incoming data from partners.
Ideal Candidate
  • A degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science (with a strong focus on GIS) or similar
  • Member of a relevant professional institution or have demonstrable experience.
  • Experience in the use of GIS based system, in particular QGIS and the ability to import data from other systems.
  • Experience of managing GIS workload on multiple projects.
  • Familiarity with Ordnance Survey mapping.
  • Ecological knowledge or experience desirable.
  • Experience with technical report writing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, the public and third parties.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
