Job Description

The main purpose of this role will be as an internal and external communications officer.

A key part of this role will be engaging with our volunteers and young people to identify good news stories and campaigns to share across our County. This may include visiting sessions and events, and establishing and maintaining relationships with our volunteers. The postholder will also be helping to promote the County’s own activities and events, such as our large-scale camps. This will be through gathering of good stories and visual content after events have been held to be shared across social media and internal comms. The post holder will need to be able to clearly communicate what information they need and how to gather this, to our members, who typically have a wide-ranging ability for content creation. This role may also require providing hands-on training and support for our Groups and Districts, who produce their own regular membership updates also.

This role will be creating and compiling internal membership updates, and external communication updates for our stakeholders, both of which are typically sent via email. The role will also involve engagement with local media and stakeholders. This will involve ensuring the content is within the Scout brand and is accurate, accessible and engaging.

This role will manage our social media accounts, which currently includes Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The role will also maintain content for our website, ensuring it remains up to date and is readable and engaging. The role will also include working with digital marketing tools such as email marketing, Google Analytics and Search Engine Optimization.

Scout HQ run regular campaigns, which our members are encouraged to participate in. The postholder will need to keep abreast of these campaigns and facilitate how North Yorkshire Scouts may be able to participate with it. Scout HQ also provides our brand guidelines which the postholder will have to work within.

This role will also have a new responsibility in designing and producing items of merchandising for our members, for example clothing items for our volunteers. This role will take the lead in managing the stock, sales and distribution, with support of their fellow Member Support Officers.

Key tasks and responsibilities

● Compiling and editing regular internal membership communication bulletins, external stakeholder updates and our County website.

● Maintaining good relationships with a wide variety of volunteers from across North Yorkshire, to collect good stories and news articles to share. This may include visiting sessions or camps and may include minor photography and videography.

● Effective use of social media to promote Scouting in North Yorkshire to promote best practice to our volunteers.

● Utilising the Scout branding accurately in all communications. Maintaining knowledge of the Scouts’ national work and campaigns.

● Designing and sourcing items of merchandise, and managing stock and sales, alongside support from other Member Support Officers.

● The postholder may also be required to undertake other tasks as may be reasonably required, alongside the other Member Support Officers.

Demands of the role

● This role will involve undertaking independent project work, as well as assisting colleagues with regular administrative functions. It will involve regular communication with volunteer team leaders, and Scouting volunteers from across North Yorkshire.

● The tasks of this role are predominately computer-based work, with no physical demands foreseen. Training can be provided if the postholder is not experienced in our main computer systems.

● This position has no core hours, and the postholder can choose their own flexible working hours, to fit the 15 hours as they choose, across a 7 day week.

● The postholder will be expected to attend some Scouting sessions, events and workshops, which take place across North Yorkshire. These will typically occur on weekends and in the evenings, rather than during the normal 9-5 working day.

● We have a small office in Thirsk, and a third of our membership are based in York, with other large Scout groups in Scarborough and Harrogate. Therefore, travel to these areas is likely, approximately 2-3 times a month.

● The postholder will need to become a member of The Scouts and adhere to the Scouts’ policies. This will require undertaking basic training on Scouting, Safeguarding, Safety and GDPR. The role will also require an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS).
