Position Overview & Specifications

We're making zero carbon happen

We're OVO Group, a big family of companies united by a single vision: to get to zero carbon, fast.

We call this Plan Zero – and it shows how we'll be fighting the climate crisis and transforming the way people use energy over the next decade. To do this, we need the sharpest minds. Are you up for the challenge?

Do great green things with OVO Energy

So much has changed since we launched in 2009. Our goal remains the same though: make energy cheaper, greener, and simpler. Just as it was on day one.

Everyone belongs at OVO

Our aim is to build a diverse and inclusive movement: teams of brilliant people, with unique talents, skills, passions, and experiences.

We encourage everyone to join us, whatever your gender identity, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, life experience, or background. So please come as you are – we can't wait to meet you.

Where in the world of OVO will I be working?

The Threat Detection & Response team is a small, yet growing part of the OVO Information Security team. Our key focus is to increase the resilience of products and services we offer OVO Energy customers through improved detection of, response to, learning from and anticipation of cyber attacks.

This role will report into the Head of Threat Detection and Response which is one of the functions within the larger Information Security department. Today we have team members working in the Bristol, London and Glasgow hubs offices and working from home.

What will I be doing?

The successful candidate will be experienced in designing and working processes and methods for servicing perceived and legitimate incidents related to security and privacy. As a security minded incident responder you will lead teams through ambiguous situations and drive tasks and decision making to responsibly resolve events for OVO and ultimately its customers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Be the subject matter expert that drives engagement on security & privacy incidents and ensure our playbooks and methods are followed to ensure an efficient and effective response.
  • Lead our front line on-call active responder team coordinating and managing incident resolution with speed, cross-functional collaboration, and accuracy, partnering with a broad set of stakeholders.

  • Formulate strategy for both vulnerability and threat management and deliver on communications to internal stakeholders. Influence and make decisions through interpretation of data and consolidation of input from multiple stakeholders.

  • Contribute to incident root cause analysis, identifying remediations and process improvement based on observed trends for OVO incident processes.

  • Manage programs and projects, in collaboration with engineering, product, and operations teams, focused on improvements to process, metrics, and framework.

Is this the job for me?

  • 4+ years of relevant experience
  • A healthy scepticism for the status quo
  • Ability to drive concurrent projects and initiatives while managing operational responsibilities
  • Software engineering experience in a high-stakes production environment
  • A learning mindset, regardless of level or experience

  • An exemplary, user-focused communication style; emphasising clarity, empathy and accuracy
  • Skill and credibility delivering operational work while maintaining a high bar for quality
  • A willingness to lead by example and participate in the work as necessary
  • Experience with a broad range of technologies including endpoint detection, network technologies, and AWS cloud services.
  • Ability to create a healthy work environment that's both supportive and challenging
  • A history of delivering projects through cross team collaboration and partnerships
  • Demonstrated success overseeing internal tool development and automation at scale
  • Extremely strong focus on developing security mechanisms, guardrails and risk awareness for others
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Possess an empathetic, humble, customer-focused demeanour.

Ideally you will have:

  • Able to work under pressure while keeping a professional and logical approach to solving problems.
  • Experienced in knowing when to make fast and slow decisions.
  • Technical in a way that allows you to understand the issues that arise at the intersection of security, infrastructure, and human systems.
  • Strong at process definition and optimisation.
  • Agile in processing new information and actively pivoting work to yield the most impactful results

  • Intellectually curious, with great problem-solving skills.
  • Skilled in the communication, leadership and diplomacy needed to manage/coach/influence team mates and others.
