Position Overview & Specifications

Due to our continued success and expansion, we have an exciting opportunity for a Field Engineer to join our Scottish Power Energy Networks team.

Magdalene is a leading telecom services supplier offering a complete end to end service across the UK and Ireland. Magdalene provides specialist services to our clients in the fixed, mobile and utilities infrastructure networks in both public and private sectors of the market. Our services include acquisition, design, construct, rigging, first line maintenance, managed services, capital project delivery, complete network outsourcing, smart metering, and satellite solutions.



As a Field Engineer you will be part of our diverse team who are responsible for the successful delivery of various projects and maintenance of the SPEN telecoms network across Central and South Scotland.

The role involves installation & commissioning and first line reactive maintenance on our support contract. This is on a Monday-Friday 0800-1600 basis. Applicants require to be flexible, assisting with overtime when required and taking part in an on-call rota that ensures our customers’ critical services are maintained 24/7, 365 days a year. This role is based across Central and South Scotland so you will need a full driving licence and may have to work away from home.

Training is given to carry out your role and progression opportunities within our team are fully supported.

What will you be doing?

  • Rack, charger and telecoms equipment installation & commissioning to an excellent standard
  • Performing Industry standard testing as required on telecoms and antenna systems e.g. BERT(E1 & Ethernet), RF sweeps, PIM, TDR, OTDR & OSCAR tests
  • Wiring and connection of DC power to telecoms equipment to required standards and regulations
  • 1st Line Support and troubleshooting of customer equipment to include but not limited to: Pilot cables, SDH, PDH, radios, data-comms equipment, switching equipment, PSTN/ADSL lines & building management systems.
  • Data room ,data centre and substation works
  • Routine maintenance inspections on spare fibres and battery chargers
  • RAMS creation and work area/vehicle management
  • Completion of site surveys to enable installation
  • To pro-actively understand our customers’ needs and work to meet our contractual obligations

What we need from you

  • SPEN Authorisations would be highly desirable
  • Relevant telecoms qualifications
  • Excellent organisation and communication skills
  • A high focus on health and safety at work
  • Experience in completion of handover documents
  • Ability to be pro-active and resolve or escalate issues quickly
  • Previous work as a field engineer in the telecoms sector
  • Use of industry standard testers
  • Previous work in data centres, telephone exchanges, fibre exchanges, PCPs, DSLAMs, customer HUB/outstation sites or substations
  • Knowledge of IP networks, Cisco, Alcatel & Nokia devices
  • Use of power tools, hand tools, ladders or any work at height
  • Driving for work or managing a company vehicle
  • Previous electrical or mechanical work
  • A strong set of IT skills which would include the Microsoft Office products, basic DOS commands, mobile phone work apps and online time sheets
  • An interest in new equipment & technology and keenness to learn about it
  • Analytical skills and logical thinking to assist in fault diagnosis and resolution
